Restoring an old castle - Greco Coatings supplied plaster and primer to the reconstruction of Casa Loma, in Toronto, Canada.
The prominent financier, industrialist and military officer hired noted Canadian architect E.J. Lennox to create a “medieval” castle. Sometimes referred to as Pellatt’s Folly, the project took three years to complete. At the time, it cost $3.5 million ‚Äî while an average house in Toronto cost $2,500.
The building’s restoration was spearheaded by Paula Farruggio, owner of Bolton’s SPF Design, who worked closely with Casa Loma’s CEO Virginia Cooper and curator Joan Crosbie. Farruggio used her own company to harness the talents of artists, artisans, design students, tradespeople and businesses in a combination apprenticeship and sponsorship program.
Their efforts have transformed the billiard and smoking rooms, which like much of the west wing of Casa Loma, had not been completed by the time the Pellatts were forced to vacate. Inspiration for the restoration came from the Edwardian design of the existing library and dining room and the Pellatt family’s decorative tastes.
In just under six months, Farrugia’s team of volunteers created a pair of authentic, turn-of-the-century private rooms fit for a king.
Restoration is still taking place and the entire interior of the castle is to be restored with Totem Lime products, only available through Greco Coatings.
