Spray Port

Spray Port Pressure Washer

A plastic spray gun isn’t exactly a Beatle or a Rolling Stone. But the gun for the Earlex Spray Port, a recent import from the United Kingdom, may still inspire a few painters to swoon.

The spray gun is — gasp — disposable. Instead of cleaning it, just throw it away after the first use, or the second, or the third.

The durable gun attaches to the Spray Port, a high volume/low pressure (HVLP) system that was recently put on sale in the United States. Marketed as an alternative to cup guns, the Earlex Spray Port offers versatility, ease of use, minimal overspray, less paint waste and more control. It turns out a piano-quality finish without leaving visible brush marks. It uses less paint, and it cuts application time by distributing paint more quickly.

The unit can paint any surface, but it is ideal for small detailed jobs such as railing spindles, latticework, fences and cabinets. “We’re going after the guy who is painting cabinets or mainly one room,” says Philip Cantelmi, owner of PMC Marketing and Sales, which distributes the Spray Port in the U.S. “The unit is so much faster. And you can get detail without overspray.”

The spray gun comes with round, horizontal and vertical jet spray patterns, and sprays as fine as 1.0 inch for a high-quality finish. The design of the gun helps the customer control liquid flow and application.

A compact, three-stage tangential Amertek-Lamb motor supplies the Spray Port with constant airflow, allowing paint to be distributed evenly despite varying viscosities. The unit comes with up to 32 feet of air hose, a 6-foot main cable and a spray gun with a liquid capacity of 1 quart.

Painters may clean the plastic guns using paint thinner, water or other cleaning liquids. Or, of course, they can discard them and buy new ones.

The low-maintenance machine is marketed to the tool rental industry as well as to professional painters. For rental stores, the innovation eliminates the need to clean and stock parts for the spray gun. Instead, a clerk can just give a disposable gun to the customer to keep.

The Spray Port is made by Earlex, a company based in the United Kingdom. The suggested retail price for the Earlex Spray Port is $529, while the disposable guns retail for $19.99 apiece, or about $120 for a six-pack carton.

Right now, the Spray Port and its disposable guns may only be purchased in the States through PMC Marketing and Sales, which distributes Earlex HVLP spray systems and wallpaper steamers/strippers. But PMC is talking with national retail store chains to get the products placed on their shelves.
