Rauch Paint Guide
An industry report released in late 2004 predicts slow overall growth for the U.S. paint industry in the next several years, but a jump in sales and shipments of powder coatings and radiation-cured paints.
The Rauch Paint Guide, a statistical overview published by Impact Marketing Consultants, projects that domestic consumption of all paint and coatings will grow by 4.5 percent annually in current dollars to $20.1 billion in 2008, up from $16.1 billion in 2003. Unit volume is forecast to grow 3 percent annually, from 1,339 million gallons to 1,555 million gallons in 2008.
Powder coatings and radiation-cured paints will grow much faster than the industry average, the report says, as they replace solvent-borne paints that run afoul of new VOC regulations.
Meanwhile, growth in the architectural coating sector is slowing, according to the Guide. It projects a 3.1 percent annual increase in sales between 2003 and 2008, compared to 3.5 percent annual increases between 1990 and 2003. Growth in shipment volume will also cool. The report forecasts annual increases of only 1.7 percent between 2003 and 2008, compared to 2.6 percent annual increases between 1990 and 2003.
Corporate consolidations have been numerous, notes the report: 13 of the leading 40 suppliers in 1990 have since merged or been acquired. However, the annual number of acquisitions has declined since the 1980s.
The Guide also declares Sherwin-Williams the largest paint manufacturer in the United States, with 16 percent of the domestic market in 2003. PPG is second, followed by Valspar, ICI and DuPont. The report contains a directory of 778 producers, with sales and employee estimates for the largest 304.
