“New Wave” movies broke in the 1960s. “New Wave” music took the world by storm in the 1980s. Now, in the 2000s, comes the “Next Wave” in exterior coatings.
Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings North America (DCNA), makers of Sikkens coatings, has coined the “Next Wave” moniker to describe the European alkyd technologies it’s using in several new and improved products.
Four have been released so far, all in the past year. Rubbol Siding Finish is a newcomer to the Rubbol line. Cetol Log & Siding, Cetol DEK Finish and Cetol Door & Window replace older Cetol coatings.
All four are made with technologies that come from DNCA’s Netherlands-based parent company, a leading global coatings manufacturer. “We have access to research and development other North American companies don’t,” says marketing communications manager Tim Stephens.
Rubbol Siding Finish is an exterior finish made from an alkyd-acrylic blend. The coating combines the best of both, Stephens says. It boasts the adhesion and penetration of alkyds and the color, short dry time and easy cleanup of an acrylic. The combination is already on the market in Europe.
The three new Cetol products are translucent high-solid coatings. “This is basically our new technology in the arena of high-solid products,” Stephens says. “These are ultra-premium.”
Cetol Log & Siding is an alkyd satin finish that gives a varnished or furniture-quality finish to log homes, wood siding and decks. Cetol DEK Finish, with alkyd resin, delivers a furniture-like appearance to decks. Both products do the job with a one-can, two-coat process, instead of the two-can, three-coat process of older Cetol coatings.
Cetol Door & Window is a high-performance, one-can coating that offers better flexibility and breathability than other exterior varnishes and polyurethanes. It’s available as a clear satin, clear gloss or satin sheen.
Akzo Nobel, a Netherlands-based company, plans to release several more new Sikkens coatings as part of its “Next Wave.” Two are scheduled to debut late this year or early next.
