Sanders and Scrapers,
QuikSand Stripping Block
Judges for the Popular Mechanics Editor’s Choice Awards at last year’s National Hardware Show honored Zinsser Co.’s line of QuikSand Abrasive Blocks for its performance.
QuikSand will turn the heads of environmentally conscious people too, but for a different reason.
The rigid abrasive block and its cousin, the PowerSand Paint and Rust Stripper Super Stripping Block, are made of more than 90 percent recycled glass. Both strip, scrape and sand wood or metal in one step without the mess of chemical strippers.
QuikSand works four times faster and lasts longer than traditional sandpaper or sanding sponges. It’s especially useful when removing multiple layers of latex or oil-based paint or varnish.
Surface wear does not blunt the block’s effect. Instead, wear reveals a self-sharpening abrasive surface that won’t clog, tear or dry. The block works wet or dry and can be cut into small pieces to work on molding, door frames and wrought iron railings.
QuikSand is sold in four styles: for drywall, rusted metal, painted surfaces and rough wood.
PowerSand, for its part, was designed for electric sanders and works like any other “stick and sand” product. It removes rust and paint from metal surfaces four times faster than sandpaper, plows through multiple layers of paint, and can last as long as 25 sheets of sandpaper. It won’t tear on sharp surface objects and is even tough enough to smooth the rough edges of unfinished wood, such as T-111 wood siding. “PowerSand is QuikSand’s ‘twin,’” says Zinsser business manager Frank Glowacki. “It takes the same base technology and makes it adaptable to a power sander.”
Zinsser began distributing the blocks domestically in 2003. They are manufactured by Earthstone International LLC, a Santa Fe, N.M., company. To learn more, visit the Zinnser Web site or call (732) 469-8100.
