Sanders and Scrapers, Viking Ergonomic Scrapers
Sweden is known for Volvos and blondes, but if a Stateside distributor has its way, the country will be celebrated for scrapers too.
Viking Sales Inc., based in Victor, N.Y., specializes in importing Swedish paint removal technology to the United States. “We were very surprised to find a market with scrapers,” says Viking Sales president Soren Eriksson. “When you go around to stores, there are so many of them. But they’re not high quality. It’s a great little niche.”
Viking’s finest scraper is a two-handed scraper manufactured by Anza AB that has garnered praise for its unique ergonomic design. The scraper features an ergonomic pistol grip for the user’s pulling hand. Its two-inch tungsten carbide steel blade is reversible and slightly curved.
Designed by A&E Design, the scraper won an Excellent Swedish Design award from Svensk Form (the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design).
Viking also markets a series of Swedish steel tools that scrape with triangles, boomerangs and other quirky shapes instead of a traditional blade.
The profiled heads allow the scrapers to work into moldings and doors in a way that straight scrapers can’t. They collect almost no paint matter on the job, a benefit when removing thick coats or multiple layers. Speedheater System AB, the Swedish manufacturer of the shaped-head scrapers, is also developing a scraper with an egg-shaped head to peel paint out of the grooves of pillars.
