U.S. Green Building Council, LEED
The U.S. Green Building Council, the creators of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System, announced that its new Washington, D.C., headquarters has earned LEED Platinum Commercial Interiors certification. The office suite is located within the Service Employees International Union building, also LEED-certified.
The new space underscores the Council’s commitment to green building innovations. Highlights include reused granite countertops and, on the walls, nontoxic paint. Salvaged wood timbers form a screened forest wall around an elliptical conference room. Glass panels and millwork from previous tenants are reused in the pantry and copy room. Rapidly renewable bamboo, linoleum, and cork flooring have been installed throughout the space, along with fully recyclable carpet tiles. “As the developers of the LEED rating system, it was very important for USGBC’s headquarters to be in a LEED-certified space,” noted USGBC president and CEO Rick Fedrizzi in a press release.
The interior architect was Perkins & Will and the contractor was James G. Davis Construction Corp., based in Rockville, Md.
